PERSONAL PROGRESS ADVISOR

HAPPY 2016, HULA GIRLS!!!!

Today I am posting about my church calling. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints we have the privilege to serve others in various "callings" . Did I mention we do this on our own time and our own free will WITHOUT pay? (click here for more on why we do not get paid and why that's ok!)

I was previously called to be the pianist in primary where I got to play fun, spiritual and uplifting songs as well as hear the sweet voices of young children every Sunday! It was the BEST! You would not believe the nose picking that went on...or maybe you would. ;)

Now, (more like 4 months ago) I have been called to work with the Young Women in our ward (local congregation). As the Personal Progress Advisor I am basically there to encourage, answer questions, be their #1 fan, and "help them prayerfully choose goals that will help them to cultivate feminine attributes, strengthen their testimony, and reach their divine potential".

I love to perform on a big stage, but for some reason when I get in front of these girls each Sunday, I get SO nervous. I feel so much pressure to say something inspirational and meaningful because I just want these girls to succeed and be inspired to better themselves and to Come Unto Christ. I struggle a little following the spirit because I like to have things written and planned out! Almost rehearsed, if you will. I also strongly DISLIKE long awkward pauses of silence. Ha ha! So, teaching with the spirit and really listening with an open heart and mind for inspiration is something I am trying to work on; which is just ONE of the many reasons why I think this calling is for me to learn and grow. I have learned SO much from being around these young women. I think I am in there so that they can help ME grow to be a better mother, wife, and daughter of God.

This year the Youth in our church are focusing on The BOOK of MORMON  and had the idea to print out this "Read The BOOK of MORMON in 90 DAYS" schedule and put it in a dollar tree frame, so that I can set it up on my nightstand and check off my reading as I go. It has what I need to read each day in order to read the Book of Mormon in 90 Days!

(see on instagram)

This is an older photo from earlier this month. I promise I am caught up! :D

Just use a dry erase marker and TA-DA! You are free to use over and Over and OVER AGAIN! I have a calendar in a picture frame as well. It's very customizable.

This has been working out amazingly well for me! Have I read each day without having to catch up? Definitely, NOT! Ha ha! BUT, it's working and I can already feel and see a difference in the way my day goes when I read, opposed to when I miss a day and have to do a little catching up ;) . Hey, nobody's perfect!

As the Personal Progress Advisor I am also there to help motivate the girls and just get them to think about their Personal Progress. I came up with the idea of a "Personal Progress Giveaway" where I have a special gift for whomever gets the most Personal Progress (PP) done in a month! So, the girls go for 3 weeks and on the 4th week, I announce the WINNER! This is the first month I have tried it and well, It's been OK. You know teenagers and their ability to express any emotion. Ha ha! ;)
A lady in our ward even donated a FREE haircut! FREE HAIRCUT, PEOPLE!!!! But, sadly, the girls haven't really jumped to the occasion. Don't get me wrong, a few have definitely done some Personal Progress but, not as many girls have gotten some PP done as I had hoped. It's our 3rd week now and I think I will try one more month and see how it goes ;). Maybe when they see the winner actually get their prize it'll hit them and they'll be a little more motivated?! I hope! We'll, see. At least I'm trying, RIGHT? Ha ha!

(created this on picmonkey.com)

I will be sure to keep you updated (for those who are interested) on how the PP Giveaway goes! PLEASE feel free to share in the comments ANY ideas of how I can help make Personal Progress more motivating for my girls!

Love,

FLASH BACK FRIDAY

Ok, I realize this isn't beauty but I really wanted to share this with you all.

This is a little poem that I hope will uplift and inspire you to pay more attention to those around you. Whether they be your kids,  nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, but more specifically, your parents and grandparents.

I was on Instagram and another favorite beauty youtuber, Bonnie Hellion posted this poem by Shel Silverstein. I'm sure you've heard of it but, I wanted to share it with you anyway because I had never heard of it. At least not that I can remember. It just really hit me.

Guys, I literally almost cried. My mom passed away a little over 3 years ago. It is never easy going through the loss of a loved one. My father is a strong person but, of course, it's still really hard on him. This poem really opened my eyes and helped me realize that sometimes we forget that adults need attention too. We focus a lot on giving more attention to our children (rightfully so), but we forget those who raised us, fed us, and changed our poopy diapers. Ha ha!

After reading that poem I went out to lunch with my dad. I didn't get any pictures because I was just spending as much time as I could with him. Giving him all my attention. It was great. We even took the scenic route home and just talked in the car. I urge you all to find time to pay attention to the adults in your life. They need attention too.

If you don't follow me on my vlogging channel on youtube, you wouldn't know that I am adopted. I was adopted at 6 months from W. Samoa.  This was the day I was sealed to my family for all eternity in the Oakland LDS Temple. Sorry it's so blurry, I took it with my iPhone and then cropped the rest of my family out. BAHAHA!

Wedding Day! May 20th, 2006. Daddy's girl. Yay for skinny pictures! Lol!

Daddy daughter dance. This was so fun :)

Look how studly my husband looks next to my tiny mama. :) My husband (Ben) always felt like he was going to break her when he'd give her hugs. :)

My dad (Gramps) with just a few of his granddaughters. Yeah, my daughter likes to think she owns her gramps' lap when going to Wal-mart or Sam's. She would rather ride than walk. THAT'S MY GIRL! ;)

Now, go give your kids a hug and tell them you love them...then go call your parents and grandparents and tell them you love them!

Thanks for stopping by!

Stay chic,

WHAT IS BALAYAGE?

Well, It all started yesterday. I was on instagram and came across lovely_deseret 's  (fashion blogger) page and she posted this dazzling picture of her hair color she just recently had done. The description underneath the photo said, "My rose gold balayage". Balayage? What the heck is that?! How do you even say that?! Apparently I've been living under a rock! I guess this was super popular last year and is here to stay awhile!

Now, after a little research, I am here to help you understand why balayage is the most seen hair technique done on celebs!

Ready? Ok!

This is how to pronounce it. You're welcome:

Balayage-  Taken from the french word meaning "to sweep". Balayage is a freehand highlighting technique. The lightener is hand painted on. It gives a very natural looking effect compared to regular foil highlights that are very uniform and precise. With this technique, your highlights are more at random, not systematically placed which causes your hair to have no drop off or line (there shouldn't be an actual line in any ombre, but you get what I mean.) of where the hair gets lighter giving you a very natural, beachy, and sun kissed look. It is a very customizable technique that can give you many different results!

What I love is the balayage ombre look! You still get the look of our beloved ombre (where the hair fades into another color generally dark near the roots to light at the ends), but with the balayage technique which will give a more natural look.

Here are a couple videos I found that I felt best depicted the balayage technique:

Guy Tang goes into a little more detail on how he helps his clients get the perfect balayage ombre look!

Here are some of my favorite balayage looks!

See (pic. below) how the highlights are more random? Some go up a little more than others and the highlights are very sporadic. Which I LOVE because it gives your hair a more natural and imperfectly perfect look... rather than a regular ombre without the bayalage technique which gives the your hair color have a drop off or line (not an actual abrupt line, but you know what I mean!) from where your hair starts to fade into the next color.

Balayage is pretty low maintenance. It gives you softer, less noticeable regrowth lines and it also gives you longer wear in between appointments.

Looks great on dark hair! As for what color to go for with your highlights? It's really up to you and your colorist, but what I hear is 2-3 shades lighter than your natural hair color is best (and easiest to explain to your colorist if you're like me and don't know all the proper names and numbers of hair colors) if you want a natural look that will really brighten up your skin tone.

This is my favorite! Remember the fabulous blogger I told you about earlier? Well, this was her inspiration picture! Isn't Rose Gold amazing on a brunette?! Fantastica!

What do you think? Are you going to ask your hairstylist for the balayage technique to be done on your hair? Is it a nay or yay?! I think a YAY! I totally love it :) I am definitely going to see if my colorist will balayage my mane!

XOXO

MAKEUP ROOM RANT!

Did you know there are women out there who have  a  MAKEUP/BEAUTY ROOM?!

WHAAAA?! Seriously?! I just have a bathroom counter. Ha ha! Jk, that's just where most of my makeup lies because I am the WORST at keeping my makeup organized! Hopefully i'll get it back to looking nice and maybe do a little makeup collection video. It will be a very short video because i'm not as cool as other women with makeup rooms. Ha ha! ;)

NBFR (<----totally went all teenager on you guys. did you like that? Hee hee) I was kind of in awe! I had no idea these things existed until about a year ago and I just decided to blog my thoughts about it.

At first, I thought it was a bit ridiculous that women had a separate room for their clothes, shoes and makeup. Basically a whole room for their closet. I thought, wow! This is RIDICULOUS! Now, hold on! Before you click out of here, hear me out. *clears throat  *  I thought, wow! A whole other room just for our material things?! Isn't that a bit vain? Then, the more I thought about it the more I thought, "WHY NOT?!"! I mean, some men have man caves... a place where they can go, hang out, watch sports on their little man cave tv, so we ladies don't have to hear it or watch it. ;)
They have their little space to themselves. It's almost like a refuge, I guess? (For lack of a better word) and they aren't looked down upon for having or even WANTING one.

I also thought about how some women have craft rooms, sewing rooms, and some; apparently, have makeup rooms! I just came to this realization that these rooms are basically dedicated to what a person loves! They're rooms for you to do your little hobbies!  Whether it be sewing, crafting or doing makeup! So, why should I hate on these women for wanting a separate room for things they love like, makeup?! Because let's face it, what woman wouldn't want a room to have solely for their perfumes, shoes, makeup and clothes?! I really don't think my husband would mind if I had a whole room for all of those things as well as a room to glam up the way I want, right? It'd free up a LOT more space for his things. The poor dear. ;)

After coming to the realization that I was a complete rude and judgmental person, I decided that I could totally dig a makeup room! Seriously! I would LOVE a makeup room or maybe even just a makeup corner! I don't think I need a whole room for my makeup because I don't really have THAT much makeup. I'm more of the, "use whatever I have until it's gone" kind of girl, but that doesn't mean I don't like to dream and watch my  favorite "beauty gurus" and their videos of their makeup rooms/closets. In a dream world I would love to have a whole room maybe dedicated to my makeup as well as filming stuff I use for my youtube channel. That would be AWESOME!

Those were my thoughts on makeup/beauty rooms. Did you know these existed? Do you have a makeup room? Do you want a makeup room? If you had an extra room what would you do with it? Dream big! Makeup? Sewing? Crafts?

Let me know in the comments :)

Now that my somewhat of a "rant" is over, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite makeup rooms/vanity tours! These videos also have great makeup storage tips for you as well! Some of these are pretty lavish. In a dream world I would LOVE to have and some are a little more realistic for me and my style at this point in my life :) Ok, none of these are really realistic for me at the moment, but a girl can dream, OK?!

Her's is the one I posted earlier. I would LOVE to have this in my dream world! Ok, all these are basically "In my dream world" but, her's is the most lavish in my opinion. I LOVE the french doors to her makeup room!

ACAI BOWLS

Have you ever tried an acai bowl? No?! Well, you're in for a treat. At least you would be if you had one right now, but you're in luck! I am going to show you what an acai bowl looks like....half way eaten. HAHA! Ok, I totally spaced taking an "instagram worthy" food picture before I stuffed my face with a spoonful of acai!

Acai- Tropical fruit from Central and South America.

They look like an ordinary blueberry, but they're NOT! They're packed with MANY nutritious benefits. Go here to read all about them: http://www.doctoroz.com/blog/lindsey-duncan-nd-cn/so-whats-so-good-about-acai-whole-lot

Now, Acai BOWLS are basically frozen acai berries all blended up into a smoothie type consistency (you can get them already purred and pre-packaged at your local whole foods store, on Amazon, or online through one of the biggest acai producers http://www.sambazon.com/ ). Then you add whatever fruit you want on top. What's great about these is that they're VERY customizable! Put whatever you want on top! Along with some granola, coconut, almonds, chia seeds, etc.  and then drizzle agave or honey on top! It is a refreshing bowl of heaven! This would be a great post workout meal. I would say snack, but you will feel pretty full afterward. I will probably do a tutorial of how I like my acai bowls, if you guys would like to see that.

Anyway! Let's get on to the important stuff! The photos of what ours looked like! :) (husband, myself and my daughter).

Bowl of amazingness that we started eating before realizing we never took a pic. Oopsie! (left) Coconut Lime Breeze: Blended acai, coconut, lime, and then everything you see on top in the picture. (Right) PB&C- Peanut Butter & Chocolate: Blended acai and chocolate, granola, assorted fruit, mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top and then peanut butter drizzled on top.

Then, of course, my husband had to try the other food truck right next to the acai trailer. I'd be lying to you if I just blamed wanting a corn dog all on my husband. Hello?! I'm Polynesian, I LOVE food! Especially, FRIED food! Ha ha! So, we got some corn dogs too. Should I have gotten one? Probably not. Would I have been just fine with JUST an acai bowl? Probably. But, that's no fun, right? Especially when another food truck is just a few steps away! It was like the BEST BUFFET EVERRR! Ha ha! These corn dogs were GINORMOUS! Very good, not as good as Disneyland's but, pretty close. I didn't even finish mine because of how huge they were. Plus, I was already pretty full after eating my acai bowl. Shocking, I know.

Then at this "food truck rally" they have this school bus all decked out and open to those who are eating at the event to go in and sit down! They have a bench inside as well as all the seats were turned creating BOOTHS! Yes, it was almost magical...like the magic school bus...but, with food. LOL! I'm so weird.

This is my little poser ;)

Click the link below to see what it looks inside. My video wasn't uploading so, I'll just lead you to their fb page :)

Now one last picture of the King and Princess of selfies  goofing around on the bus with the weird "bus driver"!

It was a great family night. I definitely recommend trying out an acai bowl if you don't wanna feel guilty about having a sweet treat and or meal. Depending on your appetite ;) No more cookies or pastries needed....ok, maybe they're still needed, at least for me anyway :)

So, look up some of your local food trucks and give them a try! Food trucks aren't ALL just fried foods :) Support your local businesses :)

Alright, it's late, so I'd better go catch up on my Netflix...I mean sleep.

Until next time,

OXOXO
